Students study Sept. 11 attacks

Sixth-graders at Holy Spirit School in East Greenbush are taking an in-depth look at the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 by researching the many aspects of the tragedy. The program is an effort to help students not only inform themselves but also come to terms with the events.

"There is no denying that it is on their minds, that they have questions, and that they have a need to know more so they can process what happened and come to terms with it in their own, individual ways," said Susan Voellm, teacher. "Making it the topic of a research paper seemed like a natural response. It allows them to explore the subject in a tangible way."

The students embarked on an odyssey of research, using books, newspapers, the internet and even first-hand accounts of the events. A reporter presented his experience to the class and answered questions about his role in covering the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.

In addition, the students used The Evangelist's website (www.evangelist.org) to read first-hand accounts of people, clergy and lay, who answered the call to help in the aftermath of the attacks in New York City.

"The students are focusing on one particular area of the events in their reports, such as the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, how the events have affected people in the Capital District, or the war on terrorism that is going on today," said Mrs. Voellm. "In a tragedy like this, it's easy for them to become overwhelmed. It's a lesson for them to learn how to focus on a topic and zero in."
