RECORD AMOUNT
Student's achievement merits scholarship
When Colby Schrom, 13, took the entrance exam to Christian Brothers Academy in Colonie recently, he never suspected he would walk away with an $18,000 scholarship. But that's exactly what happened.
The amount is the largest awarded to a student by CBA in the past ten years.
Colby, an eighth-grader at St. Teresa of Avila School in Albany, said that he's "pretty excited" to be going to CBA next year.
According to Sister Patricia Houlihan, RSM, principal at St. Teresa's, Colby finished in the 98th percentile on the ninth-grade math part of the test.
St. Teresa's prepares eighth-graders for such exams by tutoring them. Since Colby hopes to become a mechanical engineer and math is his strongest subject, he was glad he took the advanced math classes.
Colby's mother, Lori, said he also took entrance exams at other Catholic high schools. "He also received a scholarship from one of the others and got very high marks in a third," she said.
Colby selected CBA, he said, because "it seemed like the right choice for me. I want to get a good education, and I think I will at CBA."
Colby has no qualms about wearing CBA's military-style uniforms, saying: "I'm used to that. We wear uniforms at St. Teresa's. I think I can get a better education at a Catholic school than I could in a public school. I want to go to a good college and have a successful career. I think CBA will help get me there."
