Staying safe in Israel

Safety may seem like a crucial concern in Israel, but Cynthia Shafer-Elliott rarely worries.

"I've never felt particularly unsafe," she remarked. "My one agreement with my husband is, 'Don't take buses in cities.' But I have friends who have cars."

One incident did make her nervous: While working at Tel Rehov, she and her fellow archeologists heard a sudden explosion. Later, they learned that a suicide bomber who had been stopped by a suspicious storekeeper blew himself up to avoid capture.

The shopkeeper who also died in the blast was the brother of a man who drove a bulldozer for archeologists at the site. (KB)
