Siena victorious, high school squads sparkle
Down 60-47, Siena came alive in the last two minutes thanks to an outstanding performance off the bench from freshman Kyle Downey. With under a minute to play, Downey hit two clutch 3-pointers to tie the game and send it into overtime. He finished with 15 points.
From there, the Saints traveled to Connecticut for another tough road contest against Farfield. This game was much easier for Siena, who cruised past the Stags 78-62. Edwin Ubiles led the way with 16 points and Alex Franklin and Kenny Hasbrouck each had 14. Sophomore Clarence Jackson added 13 off the bench.
The two wins improved Siena to 14-5 overall and 8-0 in the MAAC. They will now try to keep their home winning streak, currently at 12, intact with a three game home stand beginning with Niagara this Saturday at the Times Union Center.
Girls Basketball
Holy Names continued its dominance in the Colonial Conference over the weekend, defeating Cobleskill 85-44. Five players for Holy Names scored in double figures. Hannah Wilson led all scorers with 17, Fallon Witte had 15, Kierra Moore had 12, Jackie Murphy scored 11, and Lee Arduini added 10.
The win improved Holy Names to 12-0 overall and 10-0 in the Colonial Conference.
Also Friday night, Catholic Central had three players of their own finish in double figures as they defeated Bishop Maginn 54-41. Senior Colleen Dignum led the Lady Crusaders with 14 points, who also had 11 points from Olivia DeMarco and 10 from Carly LaBombard. QuiEssence Price led all scorers with 16 points for the Lady Griffins.
Boys Basketball
In one of the most entertaining games of the season, Bishop Gibbons outlasted a strong effort from La Salle to win 61-60 in an overtime thriller last Friday night.
Senior Brian Hamor led all scorers with 28 for the Golden Knights (8-4, 5-3), but it was freshman James Vice who was the hero. With 20 seconds left in overtime, Vice rebounded his own miss and layed in what turned out to be the winning basket.
Senior Mason Horne scored 25 for La Salle (4-8, 2-6), including two free throws to tie the game and send it into overtime.
At CBA, the Brothers rode a strong performance by Junior Kameron Ritter to beat Schenectady 63-51. Ritter scored 22 points to improve CBA to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference, staying within a game of Bishop Maginn for first place.
The Griffins, with 25 points from Taran Buie, breezed by Catholic Central 87-26 to improve to 8-0 in the Big Ten.[[In-content Ad]]
