Siena stumbles, CSR soars, Maginn pursues Big Ten
Not even Saints are perfect: After a 12-0 start in MAAC play, there were rumblings of Siena College in Loudonville running the table in the conference, but that was all put to an end last Saturday after Siena fell on the road to Rider, 90-88.
Kenny Hasbrouck led the way with 29 points, but Siena couldn't stop Rider's Ryan Thompson. With three seconds left on the clock and Siena up by one, Thompson hit a three-pointer to give the Broncs the lead and, eventually, the win.
Despite the loss, Siena still remains comfortably in first place in the MAAC at 12-1, two games ahead of Niagara.
Things were not much better for the women, either, as they fell to Canisius on Sunday, 65-58. After leading by as much as 11 in the second half, the Lady Saints scored only one basket in the final 7 minutes. The loss dropped Siena to 9-13 overall, 8-5 in the MAAC.
SAINT ROSE
Prior to the men's basketball game on Saturday, the College of Saint Rose in Albany honored coach Brian Beaury in recognition of his 500th career victory. He then proceeded to add to his total as the Golden Knights (11-11, 9-8) defeated Anselm 96-88.
Jermaine Clark led the way with 25 points, including four key free throws to put the game out of reach. At halftime, CSR donated $3,400 of the day's paid admissions to the V Foundation for Cancer Research, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Camp BraveHearts.
The women also posted a convincing win over Anselm, winning 78-66 earlier in the day. Dana Brown led the Lady Knights with 19 points and was one of four CSR women to score in double figures. The win improved the girls to 14-8 and 9-8 in the NE-10.
BIG TEN BATTLE
In a battle for first place, it took Bishop Maginn High School in Albany less than five seconds to remind Christian Brothers Academy in Albany why Maginn's men are the defending state champions.
Junior Trashon Burrell took an alley-oop pass from Bundunka Kargbo and slammed it home on the first possession of the game. Maginn (13-3, 12-0) never looked back, defeating CBA 65-51 and distancing themselves further from the Brothers in the Big Ten Standings. Burrell finished with 21, finishing behind only Taran Buie in scoring. Buie finished with 23.
Sophomore Galal Cancer led CBA (14-3, 12-2) with 15 points.
Bishop Maginn needs to win only one of its next three league games to clinch their third consecutive Big Ten title.[[In-content Ad]]
