HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Siena senior garners honor
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Fidelis Care New York have chosen Elizabeth Hubbard of Siena College in Loudonville as the winner of the 2005-2006 Fidelis Care Humanitarian Award.
A two-year captain and four-year member of the Siena College volleyball team, she "has exemplified the meaning of the word 'humanitarian,'" said an announcement from MAAC/Fidelis.
As a student in the Siena/Albany Medical College Program in Science, Humanities and Medicine, she has earned a 3.96 GPA, participates in several community-based programs and volunteers in the missions.
Last summer, for example, Ms. Hubbard, a native of Newark, Del., volunteered for six weeks in Marigat, Kenya, on a Catholic mission. She counseled HIV/AIDS patients, weighed babies and helped with the pre-natal care of expectant mothers.
While captain of the volleyball team at Siena, the team finished second during the regular season, earned its first MAAC Championship in almost ten years and won All-Tournament Team honors. Ms. Hubbard captured her own fourth MAAC All-Academic team honor.
Jason Rich, a Siena athletics representative, stated that "she is a selfless ambassador of good will who has made Siena proud."
Ms. Hubbard will attend medical school in the fall.
