Siena Saints become 'three-peat' MAAC champs
For the third consecutive year, the Siena Saints men's college basketball team is going to the NCAA Tournament.
Edwin Ubiles scored 27 points for the Saints as the Loudonville school managed to hold off Fairfield for a 72-65 overtime victory in the MAAC Championship. MAAC Player of the Year and tournament MVP Alex Franklin added 22 points and recorded 12 rebounds.
Siena had to battle from behind the entire game, down at times by as many as 15 points. A strong second half lured them back; with two minutes left in regulation, Ronald Moore added one more clutch three-pointer to give Siena a 60-58 lead.
Fairfield tied the game soon after on a layup from Colin Nickerson and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer. However, Nickerson's contested three-pointer clinked off the rim to send the game into overtime - and the Times Union Center crowd of more than 10,000 fans into a frenzy.
In overtime, Siena took advantage, outscoring Fairfield 12-5. When the final buzzer sounded, hundreds of students stormed the court, celebrating the Saints' three-peat as MAAC champions.
Siena will find out its first-round opponent in the NCAA Tournament this Sunday night during the selection show, televised on CBS.
