Siena gets new president
A Franciscan brother for more than 40 years, Brother Ed was previously vice president for Franciscan mission at St. Bonaventure University and a Siena trustee. He became Siena's interim president in August after Rev. Kevin Mullen, OFM, resigned to become provincial minister of Holy Name Province, the largest Franciscan community in the United States.
Brother Ed is committed to academics and career-focused programs at Siena within a liberal arts context in the Franciscan tradition. He has been developing personal connections with students and faculty, often enjoying a meal in the dining hall among them.
"Brother Ed has established a definite presence on campus. He has made a concerted effort to reach out to the students and to welcome them into our community," said Student Senate president Tom Kaczmarek, a senior.
Through Siena's current strategic plan and $50 million comprehensive campaign, both titled "Living our Tradition," the college is working on cutting-edge academic programs, diversity, scholarships, Division I athletics and technologically advanced, student-focused living and learning spaces.
Brother Ed has begun addressing the challenges facing Siena and other liberal arts institutions, including a shrinking college-age population, the need to diversify course offerings and increased competition from long-distance, online delivery systems.
"Remaining true to Siena's roots while also branching out into new and uncharted directions is an ongoing task," said the new president. "Solid steps have already been taken toward an even more promising future."
Brother Ed will be formally installed as president at a date to be determined during the spring 2015 semester.[[In-content Ad]]
