PRAYER
Service set for 'Blue Christmas'
While many Catholics are hoping for a white Christmas, parishioners at Corpus Christi Church in Round Lake are preparing a Blue Christmas prayer service, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m.
Joan Haviland, coordinator of liturgy, told The Evangelist, "All the holiday preparations are simply a reminder to some people of what they have lost or never had. We thought it important that we make a safe space for those experiencing sadness, depression or grief from loss at this time of the year. It could the loss of a loved one through death or divorce, or the loss of employment, or even coping with ongoing, long-term illness or isolation.
"We want people to know that it's okay to feel their loss and that, at this time of year, they are lovingly supported by our faith community."
Genesis
The idea for the event came from an article in a monthly liturgical magazine. "We thought it would be good for our community," Mrs. Haviland said.
With the help of administrative assistant Linda Molloy; funeral and Baptism coordinator Paula Barrett; and Rev. Martin Fisher, pastor, the Blue Christmas prayer service took shape.
"We'll be using some Scripture readings from Isaiah and the Gospels, and some poems and short readings that pertain to loss and loneliness," she said.
The service will also include soft, reflective music, and time for personal meditation and prayer in silence.
Waiting time
The Advent wreath will also be used.
"This is a time of waiting in the darkness," she said. "The first candle will be lit for those we have lost and whom we remember. The second candle will represent our hopeful redemption from the pain of loss. The third will be to remember that we are special and loved by God, and a gift to others. The fourth candle will be lit to represent the hope and redemption that the Christmas story offers each of us."
