Series has covered everything from popes to artwork

During 1999, in preparation for the millennium, The Evangelist has asked a panel of scholars to examine history for the past 2,000 years and to select some significant people and events. In the previous installments to the 12-part series, the panelists made the following choices:

* Most significant non-Catholic Christian: Martin Luther

* Popes who made greatest contribution: Gregory the Great and John XXIII

* Most pivotal era for Christianity: The first centuries after Christ

* Artwork that best captures Jesus' message: Michelangelo's "Pieta"

* Most outstanding non-Christian religious leaders: Mohammed and Gandhi

* Church's worst mistake: Repression of conscience

* Most outstanding trip: Paul's missionary journeys

* Greatest misunderstanding among Catholics: Nature of Church and Christ

(Articles elucidating on these choices can be found on The Evangelist's web site: www.evangelist.org.)
