Schools name top students for 1998
High schools in the Albany Diocese have announced valedictorians and salutatorians for the class of '98:
* At Catholic Central High in Troy, Bethany Leigh Schongar is valedictorian. The daughter of Michael and Marcia Schongar of Troy, Bethany is treasurer of the National Honor Society, a member of the Math League and a tutor. She will attend Cornell University.
Salutatorian at the Troy school is Vincent Milano, the son of Stefana Milano of Troy. A member of the soccer and track teams, Vincent is an officer in the Service Club. He will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.
* At Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady, Brendan O'Connor is valedictorian. The son of Gary and Catherine O'Connor of Scotia, Brendan won the Sister Genevieve McMahon Award for General Excellence and the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award in Writing. He will attend Georgetown University.
Salutatorian there is Alex Steven Malecki, the son of Robert and Laura Malecki of Schenectady. He is a member of the National Honor Society, starred in school musicals, and played on the school's baseball and bowling teams. He was active in the Albany Diocesan Drug Education Ministry. He will attend Iona College.
* At Bishop Maginn High School in Albany, Joyce Barlin is valedictorian. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jorge Barlin of Loudonville, she racked up a cumulative average of better than 99 percent. She will attend the Siena College/Albany Medical College Program.
Salutatorian there is Priya Pillai, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sasi Pillai of Albany. She will pursue pre-med studies at Canisius College in Buffalo.
* At LaSalle Institute in Troy, Paul Prudhomme Jr. is valedictorian. The son of Rose Marie and Paul Prudhomme of Troy, he won awards for excellence in English, social studies, foreign language and science. He will attend Georgetown University.
Salutatorian there is Royal Simmons, the son of Darlene and Royal Simmons of Troy. A member of the National Honor Society, he won awards for excellence in math and science, and the St. Mary's Service Award. He will attend Liberty University in Virginia.
