Sad about divorce
You probably know someone whose parents are divorced; maybe yours are. Even if grownups have told you that divorces happen sometimes, you still don't like it!
Jesus felt sad about divorce, too. In this week's Gospel (Mark 10:2-16), He talks about it.
Some people asked Jesus, "Is it okay for us to get a divorce? Moses let us have divorces." Jesus told them: "Moses taught that divorce was okay because you were going to do it anyway. But when God created people, God made men and women different so they could be together."
Whether it's a friend's parents or your own who are divorced, it doesn't feel good to think about it. You wish the family was all together, living in one place and perfectly happy.
Even if it feels quick to you, most grownups don't get divorced all of a sudden. They try for a long time to be happy together before they decide that it won't work.
Jesus knew that was important. That's why He reminded His followers that God wanted men and women to be together -- so they wouldn't get married OR divorced really fast. Jesus wanted people to try hard to be happy before they decided on a divorce.
If someone you know has parents who got divorced, it's important to remember parents still love kids, no matter what. In the Gospel story, Jesus said that God created people. God made us because God loves all people -- whether or not they get a divorce.
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me remember you love everybody: parents and kids, married people and divorced people! Amen.(10-05-00) [[In-content Ad]]
