Rite to mark 50th of church
The Carillon was created for this occasion by the Schulmerich Carillon Corporation.
Bishop William Scully originally consecrated the church on Nov. 11-13, 1949. To be consecrated, a church had to be free of debt and made of a permanent material.
Ancient rites
The various parts of the rite are of ancient origin, dating back to the days of Moses and Solomon, and to worship in the Temple at Jerusalem. The ceremonies began with the arrival of Bishop Scully, who brought relics of Ss. Justa and Proba, early martyrs. The relics were deposited in the main altar of the church. The next day, he blessed the church outside and inside, including the main altar.
Following this, he celebrated Mass for the first time on the new altar. He then returned for the first Sunday Mass.
When the church was renovated in 1980, the altar was dismantled and reassembled to create the Altar of Repose where the tabernacle is located and the Altar of Sacrifice, which now stands in the center of the sanctuary. It will be at this latter altar that Bishop Hubbard will offer Mass on Nov. 7.
Major events
Accompanying Bishop Hubbard for the anniversary celebration will be a procession of more than 150 people, representing various parish organizations, such as altar servers, the Ushers Society, religious education teachers, the Altar Rosary Society and the Pastoral Council.A special place in the procession will be reserved for Alice Bennett, 103, the senior member of the congregation.
When the Bishop enters the church he will be greeted by a trumpet fanfare and Mendelssohn's "War March of the Priests," the same piece played during the original consecration of the church. The parish choir and Contemporary Music Group will sing during the Mass.
Thanksgiving
This Mass of Thanksgiving is for the many graces God has bestowed on the Catholic Community in Hudson Falls during its 170 years of existence -- with special emphasis on the past 50 years. The Catholic parish in Hudson Falls is the oldest north of Albany and is called the "Mother Church of the North."Following the Mass, the history of the parish will be displayed in McManus Hall. The display will depict major events through ecclesiastical items, paintings and pictures, and historical books that are part of the archival collection of the church.
(Editor's note: Father Lonergan is pastor of St. Mary/St. Paul's parish.)
