Rev. Cabell B. Marbury, 81

A funeral Mass was offered Dec. 9 at St. Francis of Assisi parish, Albany, for Rev. Cabell Marbury, who died Dec. 2. He was 81 and had been a priest of the Albany Diocese for 50 years.

A native of Washington, D.C., he served as associate pastor at Sacred Heart parish in Castleton, Blessed Sacrament in Hague and St. Pius X in Loudonville - the latter, while teaching at Cardinal McCloskey High School in Albany, now Bishop Maginn High. He also taught at Maginn and served as director of guidance and in other administrative positions there. He was a weekend assistant at Albany's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and, although he retired in 2010, he continued celebrating the sacraments at St. Francis of Assisi parish in Albany until his death.

Father Marbury was known for his generosity with his time. He'd continued to serve on Bishop Maginn High's board and as the school's chaplain; Rev. David Berberian, diocesan administrative advocate for priests, said Father Marbury would often brag about the number of his former students whose marriages he witnessed and whose children he baptized.

Father Marbury had just marked his golden jubilee of priesthood in June. "I was in Catholic schools until I retired - as an administrator, in guidance and as a teacher," he told The Evangelist at that time.

It's "been really remarkable to be able to contribute to people," he added. "That's what it's all about, whether you're working from the pulpit or you're working in a classroom. Someone told me, 'You'll find, going forward from teaching, that it will enhance your preaching immensely.'"

Father Marbury indeed knew what ministry was all about - and he never stopped serving until the One he served welcomed him home.[[In-content Ad]]
