PRAYERFUL MESSAGES

Resurrection Sisters selling greeting cards

Move over, Hallmark: Local women religious have entered the greeting card business.

With their new initiative, "CR Cards," the Castleton-based Sisters of the Resurrection aim to use designs and spiritual messages to evangelize and inspire. And their cards come with something extra for the giver and recipient: prayers.

"We wanted to spread our charism in our cards," said Sister Rosemary Cuneo, CR, one of the vocations directors for the Albany Diocese.

The Resurrection sisters are known for teaching in schools, campus ministry and health care, as well as prayer ministries. They have collected about 100 names to pray for from card orders on their website, www.crcards.org.

They hope to spread their message all over the world through CR Cards, said Sister Rosemary: "The goal is to proclaim the hope, love and compassion of Christ to as many people as we can, and lift people's hearts up - to insert God into everyday life and to do it in a place where we can't go."

The website has sold 52 different varieties of greeting cards and e-cards since it launched two years ago. CR Cards are also sold in two area stores.

The cards range from humorous to serious and cover special intentions, birthdays, congratulations, sympathy, get well, spiritual health and Lenten reflections. There's a pro-life series for expectant parents that comes with nine pregnancy cards and one birthday and congratulations card; the package costs $10.

Others are $12 for packs of 10 or $2 for individual cards. E-cards are $1; some might be offered for free in the future. Other holiday cards are in the works.

Six or seven artists and photographers from around the country donated their work for the designs. One was Michael LaRose, a photographer and parishioner of St. Edward's Church in Clifton Park.

"I'm happy to give back," said Mr. LaRose, who supplied the images for the expectant parent series and nature shots for other cards. "To be able to share [my faith] this way, I think, is real nice."

An intern from Siena College in Loudonville will polish CR Cards' website this fall, and the sisters hope to incorporate a service that mails cards for customers.

Sister Rosemary said groups could sell the cards for fundraisers; she also seeks pro-life groups to "co-brand" with CR Cards for the pro-life series.

"We'd be helping each other," she said. "The more [people] that can get in on this, the more the message can be proclaimed."

At a time when the U.S. Postal Service is struggling and people are sending fewer cards, the sisters are calling for a resurgence of interest in tangible tokens of love and support.

"It's lasting," Sister Rosemary said of the cards. "You put it on your mantelpiece. It's not an email you delete."[[In-content Ad]]
