Purchases aid charities
Several of Christina Anderson's pottery patterns are navy blue and white, decorated with stars. After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, she found that sales increased as people searched for patriotic items. Mrs. Anderson designed patriotic signs to sell instead, with the proceeds going to Catholic Charities.
"Everyone was buying after Sept. 11, and I didn't want to make a profit off of the tragedy," she explained.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger, a radio talk show host, promotes Van Antwerp Pottery on her website, and Mrs. Anderson wanted to do something in return. Her daughter Maggi designed pencil holders. Proceeds from their sale go to Dr. Laura's foundation.
Recently, Dr. Laura commissioned Mrs. Anderson to make some special pieces. Others have commissioned work as well, including some local churches. The chalice at St. Helen's Church in Niskayuna, for example, was made by Mrs. Anderson. (MM)
