COLUMBIA COUNTY
Parishes might merge
Two Columbia County parishes have begun a process that is likely to merge them into a single worship community, possibly at a new parish complex.
The pastoral councils at Sacred Heart Church in Philmont and Holy Cross Church in West Taghkanic have unanimously agreed to explore such a plan, a decision that drew a positive reaction from Bishop Howard J. Hubbard.
"The pastoral councils and building committees of these two parishes have initiated a remarkable process that will allow them to fully explore all their options and develop a viable plan to continue their mission," he said. "They have been blessed with many concerned and caring parishioners who understand and embrace the task at hand, and are willing and able to devote the time and energy to carry this effort forward."
Bishop Hubbard acknowledged that some parishioners have expressed concern over the possible loss of worship sites they love, but he stressed that the leadership of the Diocese and the parishes are sensitive to their concerns.
To that end, a number of meetings has already been held. Another is scheduled for Nov. 14, 1 p.m., at St. Mary's Academy in Hudson.
The reasons for the merger include the fact that the worship space at Holy Cross is a former Grange Hall that was never intended to be a permanent church. The building is in need of either extensive renovation or replacement. In addition, five buildings at both parishes are in need of repair.
The Holy Cross Building Committee has recommended that the two parishes combine their resources and perhaps build a shared facility.
