St. Henry's Church in Averill Park wants to get teens and parents talking about tough topics.

A new program, "Teen Connection," brings them together to hear about and discuss issues that both sides often feel nervous bringing up, said Cindy Coleman, director of faith formation.

The topics have included alcohol and drugs, the perils of puberty, mass media and morality, and moral decision-making.

Reinforcements

The program was inspired by a parent who confided to Ms. Coleman that she wished parents "were reinforced a bit" by schools, churches and other institutions.

Ms. Coleman, herself a parent of teenagers, agreed. "You work so hard at home; you try with your family," she said. "Parents wish they could have it reinforced. It's not an easy job these days for families, and I hope we can help a little bit."

"Teen Connection" takes place during regular faith formation classes. After listening to a speaker, the parents and teens divide for discussion. That way, Ms. Coleman noted, both sides can talk frankly about their concerns, hopes and fears in a safe environment.

Outcome

Ms. Coleman believes that Teen Connection is already having a positive effect. Teens learn strategies to deal with difficult situations, she said, while parents discover how to talk to their children while also experiencing a renewed connection with the Church.

During the presentations, she noted, "you can hear a pin drop. They really have been listening. Overall, we've been very pleased. [The teens are] able to ask questions. I hope they're able to take something away from it, especially when they're out there making daily decisions."

She feels that the program has also opened communication between adults and teens. Having parents in attendance shows teens that "the parents care. You live in the same house, and sometimes you don't always communicate. Lots of times, teens think, 'My parents have no clue what's going on out there.' If we don't know, we can educate ourselves."
