Paper wins four prizes
At the annual convention of the New York Press Association, held last week in Albany, The Evangelist won four prizes for excellence, three of them for the work of photographer Dave Oxford.
The New York Press Association (NYPA) represents non-daily newspapers -- secular and religious -- in the state. The organization honored The Evangelist by giving it:
* First Prize for best color photo for Mr. Oxford's picture illustrating The Evangelist's Sesquicentennial special issue last April (above). The judges said the photo had "absolutely great detail."
* First Prize for best special section cover for the same photo. This time, the judges noted that "the front cover design invites readership and interest in the 150th anniversary."
* Third Prize for best art photo for Mr. Oxford's picture of a statue of an angel that accompanied a special issue on angels last summer (below). The judges credited it as "an excellent art shot. Simple but highly effective. A great page."
* Honorable Mention for best special holiday edition to the entire staff for their work.
