Outgrowing cramped space
Rev. John Bradley, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Albany, has first-hand knowledge of building projects, the need for more parish and school space, and the desire to improve technology.
He recently oversaw a $600,000 building project that provided an addition to the parish elementary school, added improved technology in the school, and supplied additional office space for both the parish and the school.
The addition includes new rooms for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, remedial education and a library. What was the library was then converted into a computer lab.
"We were cramped," he said. "We had a kindergarten room designed for 15 with 25 enrolled. We used the stage in the gym for computers. We knew we had to somehow address the space issues."
Father Bradley thinks the project voices the priorities of the parishioners. "It showed great spirit and cooperation," he said. "It showed the love for the parish and Catholic education."
According to Father Bradley, parishioners painted, moved furniture and helped get the building in shape for the beginning of the school year.
"On the first night, 70 people showed up -- not just school parents," he said. "People even came during the day before school started to help. The parishioners are very excited. They're the ones who did it. The teachers, kids, and people are so happy."
Father Bradley said the growth in the school's enrollment stems from its history. "We've always had a fine reputation," he said. "The parish family send their kids here. We have a long, faithful presence." (MM)
