As Habitat for Humanity and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas wrapped up their work on a "blitz-built" Albany home, Catholic Charities of the Albany Diocese announced its receipt of two grant awards from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Catholic Charities of Northern Albany and Rensselaer Counties will use an award of $385,053 to establish on-site day care and training and employment opportunities for residents of the Taylor Apartments.

Families living in Albany's South End who are at risk of homelessness will be aided by a $198,850 award, which will be used to develop affordable housing and support services. Catholic Charities agencies in the Albany Diocese serve more than 173,000 people each year.

Schenectady's Cooperative Living Project also received a boost recently, when its new offices were opened on Eastern Avenue. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and neighborhood social marked the event. The Cooperative Living Project gathers participants from about 15 housing and human service agencies, county and city government and private businesses to work in conjunction with Eastern Avenue residents to build better housing, businesses and community in the area.
