Ornament celebrates Cathedral
With their sights set on Noel 2001, Janet Dyer and several others in the parish are talking about the design, construction and price of Christmas tree ornaments.
"The idea for a Cathedral ornament came to the attention of my husband and myself last year when we purchased one in the likeness of a local business," Mrs. Dyer told The Evangelist. "The Delaware Avenue Neighborhood Association was selling them in celebration of a local, long-standing business."
Special design
Che Mart Company, located in Rhode Island, specializes in producing ornaments in the likeness of buildings. They have designed ornaments for such local organizations as the Steven's Farm (which quarters horses for the Albany City Police Dept.) and local firehouses. When Mrs. Dyer and her husband mentioned the idea to several other parishioners, it generated lots of interest for producing an ornament of the Cathedral.
"We figured that with the current renovation of the building underway, as well as the recent sesquicentennial celebration of the Albany Diocese, what better time was there to offer people an opportunity to purchase a remembrance of this important time for their Christmas tree?" Mrs. Dyer said.
'One-time offer'
The ornament shows the front of the Cathedral enclosed in a gilt frame. Each ornament will be suspended from a ribbon and can be used for hanging on a holiday tree."This is a one-time offer," said Mrs. Dyer, adding that she hopes the ornament may become a collector's item. She indicated that the company is known throughout the northeast for their fine work and will guarantee the quality of the ornament.
"Because of its history, our Cathedral is truly a treasure for the people of Albany," Mrs. Dyer noted. "It is the mother church of our Diocese, and we believe that this is a wonderful way for people to remember its important role in our community."
(Delivery of ornaments will be in the fall. The ornament, which measures 2 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches, is made of solid brass finished in 24-karat frost and shiny gold. It comes boxed for gift-giving and sells for $17.50. The staff at the Cathedral is accepting mail orders until May 15. Send checks or money-orders to: Cathedral Restoration Fund, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 125 Eagle St., Albany, NY 12202-1797. Include your name, address, telephone number and the number of ornaments you want.)
