Nothing's bad forever
If something big and bad has ever happened in your family, you probably felt then like nothing would ever be the same again. If someone you loved died, your parents got a divorce or your family moved, you can remember feeling sad, angry and scared.
The people in this week's Gospel (Luke 20:27-38) felt just like you. They heard Jesus talk a lot about the end of the world coming someday, and they thought it would be awful! They wanted to know all about it so they could be prepared.
Jesus was asked: "Teacher, if a woman had seven husbands in a row, whose wife would she be after the resurrection?" Jesus answered, "You don't understand. At the end of the world, things will be different. People won't be married like they are now. No one will die, and everyone will be like angels."
When you lose something big -- a person, a home or your parents' living together -- you probably wish everything would go back to the way it was. The way things are now is too scary.
The people Jesus taught felt like that. When they thought about the end of the world, it was too scary. They heard about everyone who died being alive again and couldn't imagine who would live with who!
A while after a big change, things start to get a little better. Missing someone who's gone doesn't hurt quite as much; if you've moved, you might find a new friend in your new town. Things aren't the same, but they can be good again.
That's what Jesus tried to tell the people: Don't worry too much about the end of the world. It will be totally different than life now, but it won't be bad. Everyone who died will be alive with us again, and people will be like angels.
Jesus knew that "different" can be scary for a while -- but not forever.
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me be patient when things are bad and know they'll be good again. Amen!
