Nothing is impossible

Lots of teachers like to say, "There's no such word as `can't.'" But you know "can't" is a word, so you think they're silly!

What the teachers are really trying to tell you is that if you work hard enough, you can do anything -- and Jesus would agree. In this week's Gospel (Luke 9:11-17), He even does something everyone thinks is impossible!

Jesus had taught a crowd of 5,000 people all day, and it was late. "Tell them to go home and eat," the Apostles told Jesus. He answered, "Feed them yourselves." But all they had were five loaves of bread and two fish! Jesus took the food, blessed it and gave it to the crowd -- and suddenly, there was enough for everyone! Every person ate their fill, and there were even 12 baskets of leftovers.

Math might seem like the hardest thing in the world to you. You stare and stare at a page of numbers, but they don't make sense to you. Sometimes, you think you'll never be able to do math!

In the Gospel story, everyone thinks Jesus' idea to feed 5,000 people can't work, either. Like you don't understand math, they don't understand how five loaves of bread and two fish can be dinner for that many people!

Maybe you'd understand math better if you had more time to learn -- like going over every day's lesson at home, later on. It might get easier, too, with extra help from a tutor.

Jesus came up with different ideas like that. If people didn't have enough to eat one way, He said, they could ask God for help, and it would happen. Jesus even managed to turn a little bread and fish into enough for everyone.

In a way, your teachers are right: There's no such word as "can't" -- at least not to Jesus!

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me find ways to solve problems, even if they sound impossible! Amen.
