TESTIMONY
Mercy House lives up to its name
I wasn't sure which way to turn. I went to Homeless & Travelers Aid of the Capital District; they referred me to Mercy House. Me? I would never be in a homeless shelter; what would people say about me?
I hesitantly went to Mercy House. I didn't really know what to expect when I arrived. I had some very negative thoughts on this idea, but I was so distraught I just had to try whatever was offered to me. I was acquainted with a few women that were there, and they seemed happy enough.
All the staff were very nice to me and helped me in any way they could. They were very supportive of all the women there. I can't say I was always the same toward them, but they seemed to understand my stubborn days! After a short time, I began to feel the family atmosphere of residents and staff. I remember cleanliness, some wonderful dinners, cookouts. I also began to understand all the "rules"; there is a reason for everything.
Jean Dobbs and Mercy House assisted me in receiving the resources and services that I needed. After a year, I still utilize them. That encourages me to carry on in life -- with a bit of help.
I recently talked to another former Mercy House resident; I suppose we're Mercy House alumnae. Not only did we receive resources and services, but also anything women need: from clothes and perfume to baby needs for the children in Mercy House. (I still have some extremely beautiful clothes I received there.)
We also received Christian counseling and Bible classes, if desired. Both were such a great inspiration to carry on each day.
I am presently employed and productive, partially through the workings of Mercy House, which is definitely an asset to our community. My experience at Mercy House was pleasant and rewarding. I highly recommend it to any woman in need of a shelter. (09-19-02) [[In-content Ad]]
