Memories worth keeping
Jesus, teach me to try hard at remembering important things. Amen!
The Apostles were still sad because Jesus had died, when Jesus came into the room with them! "Why are you sad?" He asked. "I'm not a ghost; it's really me." He ate some food to show He was alive, then helped them understand why He died and came back to life. "I told you that this would happen to me," He said; "now remember it."
You probably don't remember what you ate for dinner last Wednesday. A hundred things happen in life every day, but your brain usually stores up just the important ones: really happy memories, sad ones and scary ones. The details aren't important enough to remember.
This week's Gospel (Luke 24:35-48) is about important memories. Jesus has died and His friends are devastated. Afraid the bad guys will come after them, too, they hide in a locked room - but Jesus strolls right in, alive again!
This is a day to remember! Jesus proves He's alive by eating some fish, since a ghost couldn't do that; then He talks with His friends about what has happened to Him. Before He leaves, He reminds them not to forget all of this.
Sometimes, you try to make your brain remember things. When you have a really good day, you might think about it over and over, so that when you have a bad day, you can think back on the good mood you were in not long ago and feel better.
The Apostles probably would have remembered Jesus' visit without trying, just because it was so important - and emotional. They probably felt scared at first, then wildly happy that He was back. They also must have talked about it for hours afterward.
Some memories, like days when nothing much happens, fade away easily. Others last forever. The day Jesus came back has been remembered for more than 2,000 years![[In-content Ad]]
