MICHAEL CANTY
Memorial fund marks 10th year
Michael Canty, a graduate of Loyola University in Baltimore, was a broker for a futures commission merchant based on the 92nd floor of the New York City building. He and 68 colleagues died.
His family created the Michael Canty Memorial Fund Inc. in his honor. The fund has awarded scholarships to 15 Schenectady High School graduates.
An award at Loyola College helps students who incur financial setbacks because of a death in the family, the layoff of a financial provider or the serious illness of an immediate family member.
Every year, the family hosts a fun run on Labor Day weekend as a fundraiser; 400 to 500 people attend. In all, more than $770,000 has been committed to scholarships in Michael's name.
His father, Ed Canty, said the fund has "brought some degree of closure to us. It's something Mike would have wanted us to do. He was an advocate for his hometown."
The family recently hosted Schenectady scholarship recipients for a 10th anniversary reunion. Some are scientists; others, teachers.
That's "a great feeling," Mr. Canty said. "It's keeping Mike's memory alive. And we meet an awful lot of nice people."
The merit scholarship criteria include high grades, but also amiable personalities. Michael, a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Schenectady, was voted friendliest in his senior class in high school.[[In-content Ad]]
