SISTERS OF MERCY
McAuley Residence to close
McAuley Residence, located at 308 South Manning Blvd., opened in 1995. A fire three years earlier had caused significant damage to the infirmary in the Sisters of Mercy Motherhouse nearby, so, rather than simply rebuilding the infirmary, the sisters decided to create a new facility that would care for aging and infirm sisters and for laypeople.
McAuley accepted both private and Medicaid residents, a goal in keeping with the Mercy sisters' mission to care for those who are sick and poor.
Sister Marilyn Murray, RSM, of the religious order's leadership team, said: "When McAuley was designed and built, it was cutting-edge and the first assisted-living facility of its kind in the Albany area."
But in the nearly two decades since, major changes have taken place in health care, and there has also been a decline in the number of new sisters entering the religious order.
"It is no longer financially viable for us to continue," said Sister Marilyn; and "there are other assisted-living options for people in the area that weren't available 20 to 25 years ago."
Current McAuley residents will receive help to transition to other facilities. No new residents will be accepted; the facility will close March 31, 2015.
