REFLECTION

Marthas, Marys, Doozers, Fraggles

Few Scripture passages cause more of a stir in the minds of hard-working men and women than Luke 10:38-42. Poor, jaded Martha: She's complaining about her sister Mary, who is sitting at the feet of Jesus, marinating in His love instead of helping her serve their guests.

In cultures that applaud busyness, it's a challenge to sit quietly and rest in the peace of our Lord's presence.

"What Do Doozers Do?" is a book by Michaela Muntean. It was given to our oldest son on his first birthday, but we seldom read it to him because it didn't hold his attention. "Doozers" are serious little guys who wear hard hats and spend their days building bridges and buildings. They never tire of working.

"Fraggles" live in the same town. These guys are more interested in consuming than building. They spend their time eating the stuff Doozers build. This is acceptable to Doozers, because by continually eating, Fraggles make room in the town for all the new stuff Doozers build. This arrangement works out quite well.

Our second and third sons were equally uninterested in the Doozer book, but with our fourth son, it was an instant hit. As soon as this child could walk, he'd hop out of his stroller. His brother, who is five years older, would often jump in to enjoy the ride, with his legs hanging over the sides.

Our youngest gladly walked alongside the stroller, ever curious and never tiring. Even before he could speak, he identified with Doozers.

I suppose some of us are Marys and some Marthas, some Fraggles and some Doozers. It is built into our nature. We can tweak it, but we are who we are - and there might be a good reason for all this diversity.

Personally, my favorite story to read to our boys was about Duck and Bear in "The Good Friends" by Judy Delton. Duck's home was clean and organized. He was so orderly that there wasn't any time for baking. Bear was not orderly. Although his house was a mess, he loved to bake and was good at it.

One day, Bear baked a delicious honey cake and went over to Duck's house. Not finding him home, he put it on the counter with a little note. When Bear got home, he noticed his entire house was cleaned up and there, on the table, was a little note from Duck.

I often see people who are more ambitious and accomplished than me and think, "I have been so blessed. I should do more. I should be more." Then, I hear a still quiet voice say, "Lose the 'shoulds.' You are loved just the way you are."

It takes all kinds to make a world. Maybe God created Marthas, Marys, Doozers, Fraggles, Ducks and Bears so that we would need each other and find Him in each other.
