Maginn comeback; Siena streak
On Jan. 29, the Bishop Maginn boys' basketball team suffered a 67-54 loss to Troy - their third of the season. Two days later, the Albany school took on Newburgh Free Academy at Siena College in Loudonville as part of the Albany Academy Coaches vs. Cancer event.
This time, the Griffins made sure the game was theirs. Chris Jeffers and John Scurry each had 14 points and 11 rebounds, as Maginn took down NFA, the state's No. 2-ranked school in AA, 60-56.
The victory did not come easily, as Maginn (11-3) turned the ball over 24 times and missed nine of 15 free throws. However, they out-rebounded NFA, 51-37. The Griffins had four players score double figures, and three with double-digit rebounds.
The Siena College men's basketball team added another accomplishment under coach Fran McCaffery's leadership: After a BYU loss Jan. 27, the Loudonville school took hold of the nation's longest winning streak in Division I, with 11 wins. Then the Saints won two more games on the road.
On Jan. 28, Siena was defeated St. Peter's 66-58, despite not having star senior Edwin Ubiles, who was out with a leg injury. Ryan Rossiter led all scorers with 21 points.
Then, on Jan. 31, Siena upended arch-rival Marist, 79-60. Ubiles returned with 15 points and Rossiter scored a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Franklin led all scorers with 22 points and contributed seven rebounds.
Siena (19-4, 12-0) returns home this Friday against Iona and will look to build on its success. The Saints also hold the nation's second-longest home winning streak, with 32 consecutive victories.
