QUESTION BOX
Local priest tapped as Q-and-A columnist
He succeeds Rev. John Dietzen of Peoria, Ill., who died this March after penning the popular column for 35 years.
Starting in 1967, Father Doyle served as assistant editor of The Evangelist for six years and then editor for eight. He became chief of Catholic News Service's Rome bureau in 1981 and also directed media relations for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Father Doyle was Catholic News Service's top choice as "Question Box" columnist.
"I don't feel nervous about it," he told The Evangelist. "It's an interesting assignment and I look forward to seeing what the questions are like."
Father Dietzen received hundreds of questions each week on all aspects of Catholic life, ranging from marriage and family issues to Scripture and the sacraments.
Father Doyle said that fitting the project into his already-busy schedule will be challenging, but added that he has missed writing.
"I like to write and I haven't had the opportunity to write as much since I've been in the parish," he remarked. "This will kind of force me to have the opportunity."
What if he doesn't know the answer to a question?
"I'll research the answers in the canon law code and the commentaries - and I'll be seeking the advice of canon lawyers, too."
