Puerto Rico's struggle to recover from Hurricane Maria is hitting home for many Catholics in the Albany Diocese:

•  Catholic Charities of the Albany Diocese is coordinating donations for hurricane and earthquake relief in several countries. See www.ccrcda.org or mail to Hurricane Relief, c/o Development Office, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany, 40 North Main Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12203.

•  Our Lady of the Americas Shrine Church in Albany, a mission of Blessed Sacrament parish with mostly Latino parishioners, collected D batteries and battery-operated or solar rechargeable lanterns for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. Contact Griselle Maldonado Torres, (518) 545-9070 or [email protected].

Sister Debbie Blow, OP, co-founder of North Country Mission of Hope, is making sure that all the donations from OLA are delivered personally to people in the hardest-hit areas. To send a monetary donation via the Mission of Hope, put "Puerto Rico" or "Hurricane Maria" in the memo line and mail to Mission of Hope, PO Box 2522, Plattsburgh, N.Y. 12901.

•  At St. Thomas the Apostle parish in Cherry Valley, Deacon Richard Brown reminded parishioners that he owns a home on the small Puerto Rican island of Culebra; although his house was spared, those of his Puerto Rican neighbors were not. At least 30 homes on the island were completely destroyed and dozens more damaged.

The Dominican sisters who provide social services on Culebra are collecting care packages of outdoor and camping items, as well as financial donations, for those in need. Suggested items include mosquito repellant, water purification kits, linens, waterproof matches, freeze-dried or canned food and can openers, LED flashlights and batteries, solar lights and chargers, duct tape and related items, personal care items, aspirin and more. Checks payable to Fondos de Emergencia and packages can be sent to St. Thomas to be forwarded; call (607) 264-3779. If checks are sent directly, they should be mailed to Sister Teresa Fontanez, PO Box 318, Culebra, PR 00775, and should not be marked in any other way, to make sure they are delivered.[[In-content Ad]]
