• At St. Thomas the Apostle parish in Cherry Valley, Deacon Richard Brown reminded parishioners that he owns a home on the small Puerto Rican island of Culebra; although his house was spared, those of his Puerto Rican neighbors were not. At least 30 homes on the island were completely destroyed and dozens more damaged.
The Dominican sisters who provide social services on Culebra are collecting care packages of outdoor and camping items, as well as financial donations, for those in need. Suggested items include mosquito repellant, water purification kits, linens, waterproof matches, freeze-dried or canned food and can openers, LED flashlights and batteries, solar lights and chargers, duct tape and related items, personal care items, aspirin and more. Checks payable to Fondos de Emergencia and packages can be sent to St. Thomas to be forwarded; call (607) 264-3779. If checks are sent directly, they should be mailed to Sister Teresa Fontanez, PO Box 318, Culebra, PR 00775, and should not be marked in any other way, to make sure they are delivered.[[In-content Ad]]
