Listen a little while

"Pay attention!" your teacher tells the class. "Are you listening to me?" your parents ask.

But you're so tired of listening, you can't think any more!

Kids aren't the only ones who say it's hard to pay attention for a long time. Grownups do, too. That's why, in this week's Gospel (John 15:26-27, 16:12-15), Jesus tells His followers not to worry about learning everything at once.

"I have a lot more to tell you, but you've heard enough for now," Jesus told His followers after teaching them. "When the Holy Spirit comes, you'll find out more. The Holy Spirit will help you understand what I've told you about God and the future."

It's tough to pay attention in school when you're learning something hard. It's tough to listen to your parents if they're yelling, or when there's something on TV you'd rather watch.

Even Jesus had problems getting people to pay attention. If they didn't like what He was saying or they didn't understand, some of them probably looked at the clouds in the sky or started talking with their friends instead of listening to Him.

If you're not listening to your parents or teachers, they might say the same thing a few times to make sure you understand. They might also take a break after a while, so you can relax before you have to think some more!

Jesus liked to say the same thing in different ways, too. In the Gospel story, He knew His followers had heard enough new things about God for one day. He wanted them to have time to think about what they'd learned, so He took a break.

Your teachers probably stop what they're saying sometimes to ask if anyone's got questions. Jesus did that in a different way: He reminded people the Holy Spirit would teach them more after He went back to heaven.

Jesus loved people so much He didn't like to yell, "Pay attention!"

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me listen as hard as I can -- especially when you're talking! Amen.
