In their 1997 document, "Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry," the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' identified the key components of comprehensive youth ministry. These eight components form the basis for eight articles in this special teen issue of The Evangelist:

1. ADVOCACY, which looks at the needs of adolescents and families in relationship to parish, diocesan, domestic and international policies and programs. This ministry supports programs that empower adolescents and their families, and works to overcome poverty, provide decent jobs and promotes equal opportunity. This ministry provides a voice for adolescents who are often the voiceless and powerless in society.

2. CATECHESIS, which helps youth develop a deeper relationship with Christ and the Christian community. This ministry helps young people increase their knowledge of the Catholic faith. It includes expanding young people's understanding of Scriptures, traditions and Church teaching. It encourages prayer, justice and service.

3. COMMUNITY LIFE, which creates a supportive environment that fosters meaningful relationships while nurturing the faith. The activities of community life build trust and encourage relationships. The atmosphere is one that is welcoming and comfortable where youth know that their presence is welcomed.

4. EVANGELIZATION, which shares the Good News with young people, invites youth into a deeper relationship with Christ and empowers them to live as disciples. Evangelization includes witness, outreach, proclamation, invitation, conversion and discipleship.

5. JUSTICE AND SERVICE, which nurture a social consciousness in young people. It encourages a life of service rooted in faith, Scriptures and Catholic social teaching. It empowers young people to address the causes of human suffering, and infuses the concepts of justice, peace and human dignity into all ministry efforts.

6. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT encourages and empowers youth to use their gifts, talents and abilities in faith communities.

7. PASTORAL CARE, which is a compassionate presence for those who are hurting and in need. It involves promoting positive adolescent and family development; caring for those in crisis by providing support, counseling and referral; providing guidance; and challenging systems that are obstacles to positive development.

8. PRAYER AND WORSHIP, which celebrates and deepens the relationship youth have with Christ through communal prayer and liturgical experiences. Through this ministry, young people are incorporated into the sacramental life of the Church. (MM)
