Good News for Kids
Jesus grants a wish
Getting three wishes is the dream of a lot of people -- both kids and grownups. You'd love it if, somehow, you got to wish for whatever you wanted. Most kids say they'd wish for cool things, too. If you got three wishes, you wouldn't waste one by saying, "I wish I'd get ice cream today." You'd wish you could fly...that you had a million dollars...or that you were a king or queen and lived in a castle! You probably won't get to wish for whatever you want in life; that's just a fun thing to think about. But there is one wish that can come true: living forever. In this week's Gospel (John 6:51-58), Jesus tells us how. Following Jesus means you'll live forever in another way: in heaven, with God. Jesus called Himself "living bread from heaven" that we're supposed to eat. You do that when you go to Communion at church, because the bread has turned into Jesus. You also "eat living bread" when you do what Jesus taught us -- treating other people well, sharing what you have and praying. Even if you got your wish to live forever, living forever as a person might get boring. But Jesus told us that heaven is so amazing, we can't even imagine it. Now, that's something to wish for! "I am the living bread from heaven," Jesus told a crowd. "Whoever eats this bread will live forever. Just as my father sent me and gave me life, anyone who feeds on me will live."
If you got three wishes, you might wish to live forever. You'd be able to travel the world and see all the inventions of the future, like spaceships that will take people to other planets.PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, Teach me to wish for one thing: being close to you! Amen.
