Ideas on Creator

The theme for the second week of Renew 2000 is "God, Our Creator." The Evangelist provides the following discussion-starters, ideas for reflection and prayer, and thought-provokers to aid participants in making the most of their Renew experience.

***

"In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters." -- Genesis 1:1-2.

***

"How rich our lives would be if we recognized the great worth and dignity that we have. God created us with a soul, a deep spiritual identity in our inmost selves." -- from the Renew faith-sharing booklet.

***

"The truth is that there is one God Almighty, who made all things by His Word, and fashioned and formed that which has existence out of that which had none." -- St. Irenaeus.

***

"The world is totally distinct from God, its Creator. The dogma of creation teaches men that the universe has its being and its activity from...Him who in an absolutely unique manner loves it." -- New Catholic Encyclopedia.

***

"We are perfectly right in believing that God made the world from nothing, because even if the world was made from some kind of matter, that matter has itself been made from nothing." -- St. Augustine.

***

"Nothing exists that does not owe its existence to God the Creator. The world began when God's word drew it out of nothingness; all existent beings, all of nature, and all human history are rooted in this primordial event." -- Catechism of the Catholic Church.

***

"God created man in His image; in the divine image, He created him; male and female, He created them." -- Genesis 1:27.

***

"It is to be held with complete conviction that God brings creatures into existence of His own free will and is not bound by natural necessity." -- St. Thomas Aquinas.

***

"God is the only one who has no beginning." -- St. Jerome.

***

"The human person depends upon God for the totality of his being." -- New Catholic Encyclopedia.

***

"God Himself created the visible world in all its richness, diversity and order. Scripture presents the work of the Creator symbolically as a succession of six days of divine 'work,' concluded by the 'rest' of the seventh day." -- Catechism of the Catholic Church.
