MILESTONE REACHED
Hurricane relief surpasses $1 million
Catholics in the Albany Diocese have donated more than $1 million to relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast at the end of August.
The total, as of Oct. 4, is $1,034,659. That reflects giving by diocesan Catholics through their parishes as well as directly to Catholic Charities USA.
So far, 87 percent of parishes have reported their totals from special collections for hurricane relief.
The money is being funneled to those in need through diocesan Catholic Charities, which has also sent volunteers to the Gulf Coast and arranged for housing for those left homeless by the storm.
