HELPING WITHOUT MONEY
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, teach me to find ways kids can help people! Amen.
Money isn't filling the pockets of most kids. You're lucky if you get an allowance or birthday money you can save up to buy toys or Christmas presents. Without money, it's easy to feel like you can't do much to help all the poor people in the world. If you feel like you don't have much to give, you're a lot like one of the people in this week's Gospel (Matthew 25:14-30). Two servants went out and invested the money they got so they could earn more, but the third one saw his one small coin and didn't want to risk losing even that. He buried it instead. Kids may not have money, but you do have LOTS of energy! You don't need money to collect the clothes you've outgrown and give them to a thrift store. All you need to hold a car wash is a bucket of soapsuds, sponges and willing friends, and you can give the money you earn to people who need it! "Free the Children" is a whole worldwide organization created by kids to help other kids; you can learn about that by calling 1-800-203-9091. The Gospel story sometimes calls the money the servants were given "talents." The master is really God, who wants us all to use our talents. Jesus didn't want anyone to bury what they have to give! (11-14-02) [[In-content Ad]]"Heaven," Jesus said, "is like a man who gave his servants money. One servant got two coins and used them to earn four; another used five coins to earn ten. A third got one coin, but just buried it to keep it safe. The first two servants told the master, 'I earned twice what you gave me.' They were rewarded. But the third servant said, 'I buried your money so I wouldn't lose it.' The master said, 'Lazy! You didn't earn any extra.' He took the coin away and gave it to the servant with ten coins." Jesus finished, "Those who use what they have will get more, but those who don't will lose it."
