Two alumni of Christian Brothers Academy in Albany -- retired BRIGADIER GEN. THOMAS QUINLAN (class of 1959) and the late retired COL. RAYMOND JOYCE JR. (class of 1940) -- have been named to the U.S. Army Cadet Command JROTC Hall of Fame. Each served honorably in the U.S. military and won many awards....
Bishop Maginn High School in Albany just sponsored a field day with Albany Head Start to highlight both a year at Maginn's new building and a weekly program of playtime between Bishop Maginn students and Head Start children. The older and younger students played games together....
The well-being of refugees and new immigrants is the focus of an "Ever-Changing World" conference at The College of Saint Rose in Albany June 8-9 to address questions that social workers, mental health counselors, doctors, community organizers and policy-makers around the world face as the global refugee crisis unfolds. Sessions include how a program in western New York helps survivors of torture from overseas and how a program in Romania helps displaced people avoid getting caught up in sex trafficking. St. Catherine's Center for Children in Albany has appointed JACLYN ALLYSS YUSKO its deputy executive director for programs. She was supervisor of residential child care and residential social work at the agency from 2005-08 and then worked at the ANDRUS Sanctuary Institute in Yonkers; she'll now oversee St. Catherine's residential, foster care and community-based and prevention programs.
St. Catherine's Center for Children's CURTIS MCKAY, a resident of Byron House, was among youths honored by The Albany Rotary Club, which singled out young people in foster care programs who are rarely recognized for outstanding achievements.
St. Catherine's annual gala raised more than $50,000 for the children and families the agency servces....
DR. ARINDAM MANDAL, a professor at Siena College in Loudonville, was selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) summer scholar. He'll participate in an institute called "The History of Political Economy" at Duke University.
Siena's School of Business recognized nine students and three faculty for research, service and innovation: Student COLIN SCERFF presented research with DR. RAJ DEVASAGAYAM on mobile vs. in-store purchases at a marketing management conference; alumni PIERRE GOUES-CLOU, ARTHUR JEANNEROT, NICOLAS MORAND and PIERRE RIFFARD had work published in the Seeking Alpha content service for financial markets; and MICHAEL CORCORAN, BENNY COSTELLO, KEVIN DANAHER and JEN HOGAN did work through Siena's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Siena assistant professor of economics DR. ASHLEY PRO-VENCHER received the School of Business' teaching excellence award; assistant professor of finance DR. ZHENZHEN SUN got the research excellence award; and associate professor of finance DR. JAMES MURTAGH received the service excellence award. Four Siena students presented research on computers in chemistry at the American Chemical Society national meeting and exposition: CHAD DASHNAW, ZACKARY GREGG, BRYCE LIPINSKI and TYLER NGHIEM.
