St. Catherine's Center for Children, in partnership with Advocates for Human Potential (AHP) and Capital Area Peer Services (CAPS), has been awarded a three-year, $1.2 million grant from the federal government to provide services for homeless adult men and women struggling with histories of mental health disorders or substance abuse. The grant was awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. St. Catherine's, AHP and CAPS will share $400,000 a year during the life of the grant, providing outreach, case management, and research and evaluation to measure the effectiveness of services provided. The new program, Project Connect, will include intensive outreach to identify homeless adults who qualify for services. Case managers will enroll them in mental health, substance abuse and health services, as well as addressing barriers that hinder their long-term stability. St. Catherine's Center has provided homeless services for more than 30 years; its Marillac shelter is Albany County's only shelter designed exclusively for homeless families. In recent years, St. Catherine's has expanded its scope of programs to serve homeless adults, as well as homeless families, throughout the Capital Region.
