Good News for Kids
Happy birthday, Jesus
It's December, and some kids are already writing lists of things they'd like for Christmas -- long lists, so Santa has a lot to choose from! Other kids already sat on Santa's lap to tell him what they want and promise they're being good.
Christmas isn't all about Santa and presents, though. It's really about Jesus' birthday. And in this week's Gospel (Matthew 3:1-12), John the Baptizer warns us that we'd better be ready for that, too!
John the Baptizer baptized many people in the Jordan River. He told them, "I'm baptizing you with water, but when Jesus comes, He'll baptize you with the Holy Spirit -- so be ready for Him!"
Everyone knows it's fun to think about what you'd like for Christmas. Some kids want everything they see in a catalog or on TV, even though they know they can't have all those toys!
While you're having fun getting ready for Santa, it's important to get ready for Jesus' birthday, too. In the Gospel story, John warned the people that Jesus would come soon. That's why he baptized them: to show they were ready to meet Jesus.
You know how to get ready for Santa, but how can you be ready for Jesus' birthday?
* One way to be ready is to treat other people well: While you're asking for new toys and clothes, maybe you can give some old ones you don't use to kids who are poor.
* If you write to Santa, remember to give Jesus just as much attention: You can pray to Jesus any time, and you don't even have to write it down!
Those are just two ideas. Kids have lots of imagination, so you can probably think of other ways to celebrate Jesus' birthday. It's really what makes Christmas so important!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me remember Christmas is your special day! Amen.
