Good Friday collection guards holy sites

Catholics worldwide will commemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus this weekend, and can help preserve the shrines connected to those events by contributing to a special collection on Good Friday.

The Annual Collection for the Holy Land raises money for the Franciscan friars, who have ministered in the Holy Land since the 13th century to maintain the sacred sites related to Jesus' life. The friars also carry on works of mercy on behalf of people in the Holy Land who are dealing with violence, deprivation and suffering.

Last year, the Albany Diocese contributed $82,000 to the collection; this money helped the Franciscans to award ten scholarships to needy Christian students and will help fund two apartment buildings for young Christian adults who are employed but can't afford the high rent required by Muslim landlords.

In a letter to parishes, Bishop Howard J. Hubbard asked parishioners to give generously to the collection and reminded them of the ways in which their donations are used.

"Proceeds from the Holy Land Collection will assist the Franciscan friars' ministry in their dedicated care of the holy shrines connected so closely with the life of Jesus our Savior, and in support of programs related to the needs of the poor, the sick, the refugee, the orphaned, the homeless," he said.

Even if parishioners are unable to attend Good Friday liturgy, Bishop Hubbard hoped that they could give to the collection.

"I am well aware of and deeply heartened by the compassionate response of our people to those in need here or elsewhere," he said. "May our gracious God abundantly bless you with the grace of renewal and the peace of this Lenten Season."
