GOD SEES THE SPARROWS
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, teach me to notice little things -- and care about them. Amen.
"Even a sparrow can't die without God knowing about it," Jesus taught. "And you're worth more than a lot of sparrows! Every hair on your head matters to God. So let others know that you believe in God; then, I will be with you."How many birds can you name when you see them? If you see a red bird, you might know it's a cardinal; a bird with a red stomach is probably a robin.
But it's easy to miss a sparrow. Sparrows are tiny, brown and white birds. They blend into the colors of trees and bushes. When they're eating and a bigger bird comes along, they hop out of the way.
You might not notice a sparrow -- but God does. In this week's Gospel (Matthew 10:26-33), Jesus talks about that.
Jesus tells us that God sees every single thing that happens in the world. God pays attention to big things like wars, but that doesn't mean God doesn't notice the smallest things, too.
If God notices when a tiny bird like a sparrow dies, God knows when you're sad over something at school or you're praying it doesn't rain on your soccer game. Jesus said God even knows how many hairs you have on your head!
Jesus hoped we'd try to act like God ourselves. He asked us to let other people know we believe in God. That doesn't mean just going to church, but also paying attention when people need help, being kind to them and talking about what we believe.
Little things are easy to miss. Jesus wanted us to look closer -- at sparrows, people and the whole world.
