God in media discussed

God is everywhere -- even on the radio, in the news and on talk shows, says Bob Cudmore, author and radio host.

"There is a strong verbal link to God," said Mr. Cudmore. "In the beginning, there was the Word. That word can be written or spoken. Imparting God's presence can be done in radio."

He will speak about God in radio, news and talk shows as part of a series at the Abba House of Prayer in Albany, titled "God in Imagination and Symbols." In addition to his talk, there will be lectures on God in the printed word, and God in video and movie images.

Godly air?

Mr. Cudmore admits that news and talk shows often seem to be less than godly.

"There are things in the news that seem un-God like," he said. "Often, we hear a lot of harsh words on radio talk shows. This is part of who we are. It's a side we don't like to see."

Despite that, God's presence can be found on air. "You can find more spiritual things on the radio," he said.

During his talk, Mr. Cudmore will help participants meditate and learn ways to discern God in radio programming.

Seeing

According to Eileen Shirey, Catholics can enhance their understanding of Jesus through the use of movies and videos.

When images are "viewed carefully, our sense of who Jesus is can be enhanced," she said.

Mrs. Shirey will share her ideas during her "God in Images" talk. She will also show clips from two movies, "Jesus of Montreal" and "Man Facing South East."

Through the videos, she said, participants can develop a deeper understanding of the humanity of Jesus. Both films show the goodness of Jesus and how difficult His life was, she said.

The parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Church and student at St. Bernard's Institute, both in Albany, hopes participants will consider the lecture an evening of reflection.

(Abba House of Prayer's series begins with "God in printed word" on Nov. 6. "God in Images" will be held on Nov. 13, with "God in radio, news and talk shows" on Nov. 20. All talks are at 7:30 p.m. The fee is $10. For reservations, call 438-8320.)
