Good News for Kids
God cares about hair
Who cares about hair? Even kids lose hair all the time: A few hairs fall out when you take a shower; a few more get caught in your hairbrush; and getting a haircut means losing lots of hair!
But even if you don't pay attention to how much hair you have or lose, God does!
In this week's Gospel (Matthew 10:26-33), Jesus says He cares so much about people, He knows every single thing about you -- even how many hairs you have on your head!
"Even a sparrow can't die without God knowing about it," Jesus taught. "And you're worth more than a lot of sparrows! Every hair on your head matters to God. So let others know that you believe in God; then, I will be with you."
You probably don't pay much attention to your hair unless it's time to wash it or get it cut -- or someone is pulling it! Hair is just there.
That's why Jesus talked about hair. He wanted us to know that God doesn't care just about the big, important things in our lives; God even cares about little things like hair. God knows when you're born and when you're going to die, but God also cares:
* when your goldfish died and you feel so sad, you can't stop crying about it;
* when you finally got an "A" in spelling, and no one is as excited as you;
* when you want to know why churches have colored windows, and no one will answer you.
Jesus hoped we'd remember that God knows everything, and God is always paying attention to us. But He also hoped that we'd pay attention to God.
If Jesus is so great and loves every hair on our heads, we should be telling people we believe in Him! And even when it's hard to do that, we can remember to pray -- because whether we're happy or sad, God wants to know about it. God even cares about your haircut!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me remember to talk to you about EVERYTHING! Amen. (06-17-99)
