Giving up that brownie
You have a brownie -- a big, gooey, chocolate brownie you can't wait to eat. But your best friend or your little brother keeps looking at that brownie, and you know that even though you don't want to share, you will -- because you love the person more than the brownie. If sharing a brownie means that much, imagine giving up a person you love because it will help other people! This week's Gospel (John 3:16-18) talks about just that: God the Father sending Jesus from heaven to save everyone on earth. God the Father must have wanted to "keep Jesus for Himself," too. He knew that if Jesus became a person like us, Jesus would get cold and hungry and tired, and even be hurt like any other person. God the Father must have wanted to keep Jesus safe in heaven with Him. Sharing is tough, but you do it because half a brownie is still good and because giving it away will make the person you share with feel good. That's how God must have felt: Sharing Jesus was hard; but if Jesus came to earth, He could teach people about God. That way, everyone could go to heaven someday and be with God. Next time you have to share a treat, remember God: He shared a lot more than a brownie and didn't complain. He shared His son! "God loved the world so much," Jesus said, "that He gave His only son to you, so that everyone who believes in me may live forever with God. God sent me to save the world, not to judge it. Only those who don't believe will be judged."
Everyone gets a little greedy when they have something they really want. If you love chocolate, it's hard to share a good brownie! You want to keep it for yourself.PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me share without complaining about it -- even if I have to share dessert. Amen!
