Good News for Kids
Get supplies of God
The end of summer is coming, and lots of kids are thinking about one thing: school supplies! Even though you don't want summer to be over, you can't wait to get cool new notebooks, a backpack and clothes for school.
But Jesus probably wouldn't be like that. He didn't believe in having the coolest stuff -- or worrying about tomorrow. In this week's Gospel (Luke 12:13-21), He tells a story about that.
Jesus told this story: "A rich man had a farm with lots of crops. `I know what to do with all the food!' he thought. `I'll build big barns for it and then party, because I'll have all I need for years to come!' But God said, `You fool! You're going to die tonight. What will happen to all you saved up?'" Jesus finished, "That's what happens when people keep everything for themselves, but aren't rich in what matters to God. Don't worry about what you'll eat or wear. The birds and flowers don't, and God takes care of them!"
School supplies are fun to buy. There are so many different things to choose from, and you can't wait to get a notebook with N'Sync on the cover or the sneakers you've been begging for.
But some kids get angry if they can't have the sneakers they want, or if their parents want them to buy plain notebooks because they're cheaper. Jesus' story was about people like that. He worried about people like the farmer He talked about, who piled up all the stuff he could to make sure he always had lots.
Jesus said simple things were enough. He said people like the farmer only need to worry about the food they're going to eat today, not months from now -- and kids only need to worry about having notebooks for school, not who's on the cover.
Jesus thought we should spend more time sharing with each other, and less time worrying about hogging things for ourselves. God will make sure you always have what you need -- even if you don't get the notebook with N'Sync on the cover!
PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Jesus, help me be happy with whatever I have! Amen.
