St. James parish in Chatham recalled some history in its bulletin: "In the years 1997 and 1998, the church was being renovated. Mass was celebrated in the furniture store in Chatham, the building beyond the traffic circle and near the railroad tracks. Entering by a side door, we sat in rows in a large showroom, attentive -- until the train went by, interrupting the Scripture reading until the train's "Toot, toot," go-ahead signal from an engineer, who did know we were there"....
The Albany Council of Catholic Nurses planned a summer fundraiser and membership drive picnic Aug. 12 at St. Pius X parish center in Loudonville....
Parishioners of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Hancock manned a table at the local firehouse's annual field days to sell raffle tickets; the parish also has a lending library with "good books about our Catholic faith [that] help us to grow as followers of Christ," and parishioners can donate books as well as read what's there....
St. Vincent de Paul parish in Albany welcomed BETH CARLIN as its new youth ministry director; she also leads retreats through Living Hope, Inc., and has been involved in parish and diocesan youth ministry and catechesis leadership....
MARY ANNE CUREAU has left her position as faith formation director at St. Mary's parish in Crescent after 13 years; KATIE DILL is the parish's new music leader for its Saturday vigil Mass and 8 a.m. Sunday Mass....
St. Kateri Tekakwitha parish in Schenectady participated in a peace pole walk Aug. 6 that visited seven area peace poles -- at First Reformed Church, First Methodist Church, Union College, the Unitarian Universalist Society, St. Kateri's, Congregation Gates of Heaven and Central Park -- to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1945 U.S. bombings in Japan. Walkers gathered at each pole to share poetry, prayer or music....
A Mass at Immaculate Conception parish in New Lebanon was offered in memory of native son SAMUEL TILDEN, who died Aug. 4, 1886. He was the 25th governor of New York and the Democratic candidate for the US Presidency in the disputed election of 1876, when he won the popular vote but was denied victory by the electoral college. A political reformer, he fought the injustices of Tammany Hall.
Immaculate Conception also congratulates its Knights of Columbus golf team, which placed fourth overall in the men's division of a recent benefit tournament for the Columbia County/Roe Jan Library Literacy Project; and parishioner TONY DEMEO, who has written a book titled, "Common Sense for Leaders," and planned a book signing at the New Lebanon Library....
Blessed Sacrament parish in Mohawk noted that its first "book study" went so well that it scheduled another, examining "The Shack" by WILLIAM PAUL YOUNG and "Becoming Catholic, Again" by CATHERINE BRUNELL. Other upcoming events include a rummage sale in October....
Holy Cross parish in Salem and St. Patrick's in Cambridge are sending donated rosaries and crosses to a Franciscan Mission in Philadelphia at the end of the summer; parishioners are invited to give them to parish life director JEFF PECK....
St. Margaret of Cortona Church in Rotterdam Junction, a mission of Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in Schenectady, is getting water leaks in the church fixed and its belfry modified and painted to keep out water....
Our Lady of Hope parish in Fort Plain congratulated the Canajoharie-Fort Plain Summer Drama Club for its presentation of "Fiddler on the Roof," which included parishioners AJ SULLIVAN, ZOE D'ARCANGELIS, MARK, KELLY and KATHERINE DAVIDSON among the actors; music was provided by ROSS BROADY, and KEN SULLIVAN was on the crew....
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas at Our Lady of Hope in Whitehall and St. Ann's in Fort Ann gave a scholarship to CHELSAE GADWAY, a 2015 graduate of Fort Ann Central School who will attend SUNY-Adirondack to pursue a career in journalism....
Sacred Heart parish in Troy announced that, after pastor emeritus REV. JAMES VAUGHAN'S 65th anniversary celebration, $1100 was donated to the parish school in his honor.
Parishioner BARBARA O'BRIEN is stepping down from coordinating Sacred Heart's baptismal blanket ministry....
