The long-time altar server at St. Mary's parish in Cooperstown has played baseball for 11 years and works at the town's famous Dreams Park, home to scores of tournaments each season for children 12 and under.
Now, he's switching it up: Having run cross-country for only a couple of years, Scott surprised himself by making it to the state meet last year. He recently earned a spot on the roster at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., where he'll run cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track at the Division I level when he starts college in the fall.
"For most of my life, I have been a big baseball player," Scott told The Evangelist. He was captain of Cooperstown High's baseball team and has spent three seasons doing field maintenance at Dreams Park, which features 22 lighted stadiums for kids' tournament use. About 500,000 visitors come to the park every year.
Dreams Park touts itself as both "promoting a high caliber of play" and allowing young players to "experience the purity of baseball as it was meant to be." Scott noted that, in the 20 years the park has been in operation, only 10 games have ever been canceled.
The rising college freshman isn't all about sports, though: At SHU, he'll be studying neuropsychology.
During his senior year of high school, Scott was able to shadow health professionals at the local hospital, Bassett Medical Center.
"I found myself seeing how much the mental health part of health care needs help," he said. He believes there are still many discoveries to be made in the mental health field.
"My whole family has been around the medical field their entire lives," Scott added: His father is an optometrist; his mother, a nurse's aide.
As an active Catholic who's on the parish council at St. Mary's, Scott thinks Sacred Heart University will be a good fit.
"Seeing that they are a Catholic institution, I just knew that being around these kinds of morals will help me to become a better person and, hopefully, a better leader later in life," he said.[[In-content Ad]]
