NATIONAL PRIZES
Four awards for The Evangelist
The awards were handed out at the annual convention of the Catholic Press Association, which represents Catholic newspapers and magazines. The Evangelist goes to 40,000 homes in the Albany Diocese each week; the CPA awards were given for 2011 articles. The Evangelist won:
• first prize in the category of "best reporting on children" for the "Catholic School Spotlight" series, which profiled every Catholic school in the Diocese over the course of several years. The judges said the stories "show the breadth and excitement of youth. The Evangelist shows its care and hopes for our children with quality and wide coverage."
• Second prize in the category of "best regular column on spiritual life" for the monthly "Seminarian's Diary" column, detailing what future priests are learning as they journey toward ordination. Only the National Catholic Reporter bested The Evangelist in this category.
Seminarians Brian Slezak, Deacon Scott VanDerveer and now-ordained Rev. Daniel Quinn wrote the column; Father Quinn has been replaced by seminarian Brian Kelly. The judges called the seminarians "refreshingly honest. Their theological reflections indicate what they teach, what they preach and what they believe. Their writing is clear and the stories make good sense."
• Honorable mention in the category of "best reporting on teenagers" for the annual Teen Issue, published each November. Since instituting the Teen Issue more than two decades ago, The Evangelist has won many awards for it.
• Honorable mention in the category of "best feature writing" for staff writer Angela Cave's article, "Biogas project wins prizes," about a high school student's innovative project to create energy from a "digester" of food scraps and lawn clippings. The project itself brought national recognition for Katie Picchione of the Academy of the Holy Names in Albany.
With its prizes, The Evangelist topped many of the other Catholic newspapers in New York State. Only the newspapers of the Archdiocese of New York and the Rochester Diocese won more awards.[[In-content Ad]]
